Services

I work as an independent consultant, usually through North Collective, a small group of senior freelance engineers. Three things I'm good at and enjoy doing:

Bespoke systems

software that fits, built to be maintained

Custom web applications, integrations and internal tools for businesses whose processes don't fit off-the-shelf software. I handle the whole arc: understanding the domain, designing the system, building it, and running it in production.

I lean on boring, proven technology — Rails, Postgres, server-rendered frontends — because a system a small team can understand and afford to maintain beats a clever one. Where AI genuinely earns a place (document handling, support triage, search, developer tooling), I build it in; where it doesn't, I'll say so.

IT consulting

senior judgement, by the hour or the quarter

Technical leadership for companies that need it but can't justify a full-time hire. Architecture and code reviews, audits of a system before you buy or build on it, help hiring and evaluating developers, and interim CTO work.

I've done this across startups and scale-ups — leading Humly's team through its heaviest growth years, product and regulatory work at Devies, backend projects at Qasa — and the useful advice is usually the same shape: fewer moving parts, clearer ownership, honest estimates.

Speaking & workshops

AI and tech, explained without the hype

I teach and give talks on software development and practical AI — what language models are actually good at, how to fold them into a team's daily work, and how to tell durable techniques from noise.

Formats range from a one-hour talk for a leadership group to hands-on, multi-day workshops for development teams. The material comes from daily use, not slideware.
